The Standards of the American Songbook have been circling in the back of my brain since I was very young. However, it wasn't until a few years ago, when I took on writing my one-man show, 'A Standard Love,' that I reacquainted myself with--and formed a deep respect for--them. These standards from the 30's and 40's are undeniably some of the best music ever written. They are still theatrical, dramatic, raw, pure and true. The lyrics, in particular, spoke to me in such a visceral way that I knew I had found the source of my show. In each of these songs, I found an aspect of my own romantic life that resonated in my heart. I have a feeling you may as well. And if there is a hint of theatricality to the resulting album, that's the reason. The songs that spoke to me fell into an order that portrays, via the lyrics, the journey of the heart through the scenario of loving and losing, and loving again.
