Bob Gillis is a two time winner of the Colorado Council on the Arts Fellowship for Music Composition. On 'Hats' he has composed eight completely different pieces, which provide his group and their audience an opportunity to explore soundscapes that are not often heard today. In 1998 'Hats' was awarded 'Top Ten Recording' by Cadence Magazine's annual Critics' Poll and 'Best Jazz Recording' by Denver's 'Westword' newspaper. On 'Hats' Bob has written for his 'live' group (which numbers up to eight players) along with a variety of MIDI orchestras. These compositions combine the acoustic with the electronic, and the composed with the improvised. Styles range from modern classical techniques like 12 tone serial compostition to musics influenced by a variety of ethnic backgrounds. You don't hear music like this every day.
