CD Progrm Notes: By 1917, all major branches of Eastern Ragtime and New Orleans Jazz-including barrelhouse, boogie-woogie, and Blues styles, were unified into one classic style known as Stride. The early pioneers of ragtime could play at breakneck tempos; their rhythms were both streamlined and creative, and their harmonies were adventurous. Although stride typified the solo piano tradition, the style was short lived and foreshadowed the end of an era. In the 1930's, just as better recording methods replaced earlier ones, solo piano Jazz was to become unfashionable. The piano was reduced to timekeeper or accompanist in Jazz bands. Stride was replaced with more progressive Jazz piano styles, and eventually forgotten. On 'Wild Side Blues' you'll hear several transcriptions from rare piano rolls which have only recently surfaced. The re- discovery of the pieces on this CD are offered as a proud contribution to the great stride tradition.... Nathan Bello.
