When Freedom Swings represents a philosophy asserting that jazz is a musical art form that perfectly describes the ideals of democracy. Many authorities agree that freedom is best-expressed and realized within boundaries. Therefore, it may be noted that within the framework of a jazz piece, (melody, harmony, and form), freedom is realized in the collective creative improvisational process of a group of musicians simultaneously contributing to the composition within the boundaries or occasionally, expanding or stepping outside of a domain. The title tune When Freedom Swings, encompasses the essence of the jazz idiom. Cyrus Chestnut opens the composition with a series of progressions referencing spirituals and gospel music which were integral influences on the jazz language. The call and response between the voice and tenor saxophone is reminiscent of field hollers and work songs, and this section also draws upon the blues. Each of the four soloists expresses their own interpretation within this form. Mavis Poole's vocals bring us back to the spirituals and a call for freedom reflecting upon centuries past.
