THE MODERN AIRLINE is a five-piece new wave band from Brooklyn, NY featuring lead vocalist and guitarist Lee Chabowski, bassist and vocalist Amy Brown, synth player and vocalist Margaret Chabowski, drummer Gary Langol and guitarist Seth Walter. Since their debut at Brooklyn's Southpaw in late 2008, the band has built a loyal following playing in the New York City area. Their angular, spastic sound borrows equally from '80s new wave and '70s punk and hard rock, while soaring out into new territories. Twin tube-soaked guitars are pierced by synth, cut by space, and propelled by kick and driving bass. Outfitted as corporate airline pilots and stewardesses, the band delivers a tight, powerful show amped up by Lee's manic, on-stage presence. Sci-fi, surrealism and sex are all recurring themes in the lyrics. Frontman and songwriter Lee Chabowski started his performing and songwriting career in 1983, when he joined Rochester, NY's The Resisters, becoming a staple of the city's vibrant punk and new wave scene, the epicenter of which was a club called Scorgies. The Resisters consistently packed warehouse-sized clubs and opened for many notable acts including The dB's and The Gun Club. The Resisters released one EP with Lee entitled Slut Rock. While continuing to play with The Resisters, Lee formed the popular upstate power pop band Dog's Life, recruiting bassist Amy Brown. Over it's eight years, Dog's Life toured regularly from Buffalo's Continental to NYC's CBGB, packing clubs and opening for acts as diverse as Winter Hours, The Connells, White Zombie and Dickey Betts. They released two albums, Dog's Life and Queenie Gots a Pinworm, receiving national and international press and getting nationwide college radio play. After moving to New York City in 1996, Lee released a solo album, Drinky Poo, before forming New Delhi Monkey Man with multi-instrumentalist Gary Langol and founding Negative Approach drummer Chris Moore. Gary, who plays drums for The Modern Airline, is a sought-after studio and live performer for his skills on piano, lap and pedal steel, acoustic and electric bass, guitar and drums. New Delhi Monkey Man can be seen and heard on the DVD music compilation The What Goes On! Show. The Modern Airline brings Lee back together with Gary and former Dog's Life bassist Amy Brown. Guitarist Seth Walter, who joined The Modern Airline in 2010, was previously another upstate music fixture as bassist for Albany's Mambo X, which worked with producer Mitch Easter on their record Whirled. Lee's wife Margaret Chabowski, previously of New York's Vinyl Richie, rounds out The Modern Airline's lineup. Here's what some people have said about Lee's songwriting: "...rocks convincingly" - Billboard "...lots of hooks, good guitars, and very twisted lyrics." - Pop Culture Press "Lee writes my favorite sci-fi songs." - Lach, NYC musician and antifolk founder "Great, brainy pop." - City Newspaper "...can only be described as weird and wonderful!" - Pop Sunday Newsletter "Demented and deranged. Good Job!" - Beave Jerky "Now that's what I call a song!" - On-air DJ WITR "Is it the greatest song in the world? I don't know, but it comes pretty close in my book" - On-air DJ, WRUR.
