The Green, the sixth album from veteran singer/songwriter James Maddock, is bookended by 'Once There Was A Boy Part 1' and 'Once There Was A Boy Part 2.' Version one has a gospel-folk gait recalling Van Morrison and the more bucolic moments of the Pogues, and version two is a fresh rendition with stately strings and dreamy vocals. Between these two tracks, Maddock traverses rustic soul-folk, electro-Motown, Tom Waits-y nostalgic singer/songwriter territory, among other sonic touchstones with his unmistakable poetic and poignant panache. This release truly captures NPR's accolade that 'this timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy.' Longtime Patti Smith bassist Tony Shanahan and former Spin Doctors drummer Aaron Comess make cameos on The Green.
