It took over 35 years, but surf-guitarist John Blakeley and keyboardist Ron Nagle have teamed up once again to produce a brand new record that proves they've still got the California moxie that got their careers off the ground. Originally hooking up in the late '60's for Nagle's cult classic album Bad Rice, over the ensuing years the two went on individually to work, in various capacities, with artists like Barbara Streisand, Jefferson Starship, Roy Rogers, Van Morrison; on movies like the Endless Summer, the Exorcist and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest; and TV shows from WKRP in Cincinnati to That 70's Show. The result is Tan Mantis, a new album of modern surf-influenced music that mixes the reverb-soaked tones of vintage surf guitar with a mellow smooth jazz style to create lush arrangements that highlight the talents of the two musicians, while leaving the listener floating on the waves.
