Fourteen songs about life and living. Mark Parnis writes from the heart about deeply personal and spiritual issues. He looks at the lives of those around us, both exceptional and ordinary, to find the universal that rings true in all of us. The album is completely his work, including two and three-part vocal harmony, acoustic finger-style guitar, piano, harmonica, accordion, bass and saxophone work. Fourteen songs, fourteen stories: An encounter with homelessness, getting to know 'the other', the story of an Irish travelling fiddler, a small-town economic depression vignette, a story of spiritual reawakening, an intimate moment, an opening of the soul, letting go at the end of a life, the hard facts of family separation due to economic need, reaching the end of tolerance for inequality, the joy of spring embraced, a moment of transition, holding on to hope for those who lose it, and a pledge to reunite with fellow travellers on the road of life. A late arrival on the contemporary folk scene, Mark has been playing different styles of music in various guises for decades. He has an advanced knowledge of contemporary and jazz harmony and song form which informs his writing. He is an accomplished finger-style guitarist, performing in several alternate tunings including his favorite DADGAD. His piano style is rooted in the folk/pop piano styles of Jackson Browne and Elton John. A lover of poetry, Mark's lyrics are thoughtful and carefully crafted, resulting in songs that leave you thinking as well as tapping your feet.
