Fans of Matt Skiba's other band, Alkaline Trio, are already spreading the word about Heavens. Mining that rich, dark vein of 1980's songwriting that's suddenly back on the radio with a vengeance, this debut allows Skiba to explore a different side of his songwriting, calling upon the influence of the Sisters of Mercy rather than the Ramones or Misfits as with Alkaline Trio. His lyrics are as beautiful as they are eerie, his vocal melodies at once darkly hypnotic and intensely catchy, while collaborator Josiah Steinbrick builds great minimalist guitar parts in the tradition of Wire and New Order.
