Pan Montuno is an instrumental journey that infuses melodic Caribbean steel drum music with innovative Latin rhythms. Original compositions by Derek Smith offer a creative exploration into musical genres such as Latin jazz, calypso, samba and reggae. The band draws much of it's inspiration from, and performs songs by legendary musicians such as Cal Tjader, Bob Marley, Tito Puente, Andy Narell and others. The sounds produced by Derek Smith and Pan Montuno evoke a positive spirit for all those who listen. This project includes some of the most talented and recognized musicians in the greater San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas. They join together with Smith to provide outstanding, upbeat musical performances. Featured band members include Derek Smith on steel pan and vibraphone, Mike Shannon on drums and Aaron Germain on bass.
