After spending the better part of 20 years as a female guitarist in a man's world of rock n roll cover bands, Christine decided to focus solely on creating original work.'My music is a catharses. It keeps me sane (almost).' I was amazed to discover how much I had to say.' Jocelyn Porter Project is a tribute to my family & to my Mother who gave up so many of her own creative dreams to raise me & nurture the artist in me.Thanks to her & to my Father for putting that Sears guitar I begged for under the Christmas tree so many years ago. On 'Metaphors and Musings,' she gets it all out, crafting compelling, emotionally riveting narratives. Melody isn't as important as delivering, raw, honest passion. Dave Richards-Showcase magazine ___ 'I tend to write in metaphors a lot of times. Can I equate it with another metaphor?' she said with a laugh. 'My songs are kind of like photographs, just little snapshots of time. And I try to put the person into that situation, where they're looking at a picture and can maybe hopefully relate to it in some way.' 'I was always happy to be the chick in the band. I played around in various seedy venues from the age of 13 on.' EVENTUALLY, SHE GREW DISSATISFIED. That had nothing to do with banging out garage tunes with the guys; it had more to do with playing cover songs. 'I spent the last 10 years focusing solo on acoustic instruments - guitar and mandolin - and just kind of discovered my voice,' Volk said. 'I spent a lot of time writing and just trying to say what I have to say through my music. Playing cover songs just wasn't doing it for me. It wasn't giving me the satisfaction I need to get out of music.' 'I wanted it raw and that's what it is.' My major influences are Patti Smith, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell. I like people who are storytellers - Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan.' Other influences - such as P.J. Harvey and Alanis Morissette - come to mind, too, because Volk deals with the psychological dynamics of relationships. This record is a labor of love for all that were involved in it's conception. After listening I'm sure you will agree!
