U-Carmen

Carmen, perhaps the world's best-loved opera with it's story of love, jealousy, revenge and madness, is re-imagined in the naturalistic world of South African pool halls, bars, courtyards and barracks. Never has an opera been made more modern, relevant or vibrant. A stunning adaptation and interpretation of the classic story by Bizet, brought to the screen by the acclaimed South African theater company Dimpho Di Kopane (DDK). U-Carmen was filmed on location in modern South Africa. The fantastic vitality and huge skill of the performers from Dimpho Di Kopane make an impact beyond that achieved by any filmed opera to date. The soundtrack, recorded by Dimpho Di Kopane with Imbumba, a young South African orchestra, combines Bizet's score with traditional South African music creating a powerful musical experience.
