The Fairy Queen is regarded as typical of the hybrid genre of the English Restoration period, drawing upon the traditions of the Elizabethan theatre and at the same time the conventions of the courtly masque. This new production was first staged by the English National Opera (ENO) in 1995 and received enthusiastic acclaim from both the press and public.
