Peter Sellar's staging of the controversial opera Peony Pavillion, featuring an original score by composer/conductor Tan Dun, was performed in the U.S. for the 1st time this spring after a very high-profile international tour. Fusing Chinese melodies with rock, Tan Dun's operatic score is an inspired blend of kunquo, Tibetan and western chants, arias, instruments and rhythms. The LA Times describes the music as "an outpouring of lyric melody... ecstatic, ravishing... "
