On paper, the idea of blending Celtic reels and jigs with pulsating Latin rhythms seems far-fetched, but to the credit of this hybrid Scottish-Latin American ensemble, they pull it off superbly. Their ground-breaking debut CD, Monstrous y Demonios, Angels and Lovers, set both Latin and Celtic aficionados on their ears, and the group's concerts in Scotland, Ireland, England and Cuba have been phenomenal. Their new album is equally spirited and tasteful. Like a good recipe, Salsa Celtica's music is about subtleties; the innovative group gingerly melds traditional Irish and earthy Latin chants with sizzling rhythmic grooves. The mid-tempo "Rumba Escocia/Cro Chinn T-Saile" features delectable bagpipe augmentation, while "Milonga for Iona" interweaves Irish folk textures with salsa. The exploratory "Carnoustie" and "Estrellita Celta" test the boundaries of this cross-cultural concoction. G2. 2004.
