If it weren't for the tray card photo of the Sno-White Drive-In, I'd have a hard time believing that Pipe hails from Aptos--or anywhere else in Santa Cruz County for that matter. This is a band with the kind of serious chops that usually comes with years of struggle to land gigs in competitive urban centers like Minneapolis, Seattle or Los Angeles: strong, colorful vocals and brilliant pop songwriting. Full of quirky attitude and yet surprisingly unpretentious, Pipe's songs are finely crafted, short on clumsy artifice and long on catchy hooks set with barbed lyrics and held in place by high-torque grooves.
