Joan Sutherland - La Stupenda

When, on February 26, 1959, the curtain rose at London's Royal Opera House for the new Zeffirelli version of Gaetano Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor, the audience was certainly interested in the debut performance of a young Australian soprano in the title role, yet no-one in the auditorium that evening was prepared for the veritable opera world sensation they were about to witness. By the end of the evening, to thunderous applause, a star had been born who over the ensuing three decades would light up the opera scene and continue to champion and successfully expand the Romantic bel canto repertoire that Maria Callas had rescued from oblivion. This event marked the beginning of Joan Sutherland's triumphant career, and gave her every justification to give her later autobiography the honorary title she enjoyed, of "La Stupenda".
