BLACKWATER MUSIC is a stylistic departure from the last several Spencer Bohren albums, with the same heart and soul we all love. It marks the first all-original selection of Spencer Bohren songs since 1994 and indicates what has been on Spencer's mind lately: a good friend caught in the past, environmental irresponsibility in Louisiana and his home state of Wyoming, the passage of time, deep love. The usual parade of guitars, particularly highlighting the lap steel singing both sweetly and raucously, define this emotion-filled collection of original songs. Another first since 1994 is the array of backup players on several tracks: son Andre Bohren on drums, percussion, and gospel piano, Reggie Scanlan of the Radiators, Rene Coman & Rod Hodges of the Iguanas, Matt Rhody on violin, Amasa Miller on piano, Tim Stambaugh playing tuba, and the lovely and talented Aurora Nealand on accordion and soprano sax. Quotes: 'Wow! My first listen to Blackwater Music has turned into 2, 3, 4 . . . What a tasty recording' - John Baute, Clinton, LA 'It's wonderful! I think the best one yet' - Jeanne Dumestre, New Orleans 'I'm enjoying your new CD like CRAZY!' - Heather McCamey / Threadhead Records accountant 'This is a GREAT CD. I mean it. And my eight year-old son has the last track, Listen to the Wind, on repeat for a week now!' - Chris Joseph / Director, Threadhead Records.
