About Double Take Since the fall of 1994, the chamber ensemble Double Take, Dr. Sheryl Linch-Parker on trumpet and Dr. Don N. Parker on percussion, has provided a unique musical, cultural, and educational experience for audiences of all ages. With the exploration of different sound textures and colors, this ensemble has enticed it's listeners with an intensity that reflects an honest approach towards music that all can understand and enjoy. Double Take has had the opportunity to present workshops and recitals in Illinois, Texas, South Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Missouri, Washington D.C., and Nebraska. Most recently the chamber ensemble has performed for the 1999 Premiere Performance Series at University of Missouri-St.Louis, the 2004 Mississippi Day of Percussion and Fayetteville State University 2003-2004 and 2006-2007 Fine Arts Series, Double Take released it's first self-titled CD through PL Productions (DT001) in 2001, which was reviewed favorably by the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), the International Trumpet Guild (ITG), and the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors (NACWPI). Double Take was also featured on WFSS 91.9 as a part of the programming for Classical Sampler hosted by Dr Marvin Curtis during the Fall 2003. About the Artists Dr. Don N. Parker, a native of Washington has performed with artists such as Ellis Marsalis, James Polk, Mark Whitfield, Ray Barretto, Oliver Lake, Buster Cooper, the Arianna String Quartet, and Jeff Jarvis to name a few. Dr. Parker has appeared as a guest artist at the Augustana College Jazz Festival, The University of Nebraska at Omaha Jazz Festival, DePauw University, Greenville College, the University of New Mexico, The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), and the Austin Jazz and Arts Festival. In February 2006 he was the featured soloist with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra where he has served as a section and principal player since 2003, performing the DePonte Marimba Concertino. He recently appeared at the Columbia Basin Jazz Unlimited Festival with Bill Watrous and Jeff Clayton with his jazz vibes and piano duo, The Haydon/Parker Duo, He has also performed with the African American Jazz Caucus (AAJC) Big Band at the Annual International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) Conference since 2002. Don has performed with the modern American music group out of St. Louis, Synchronia, which received 2000 ASCAP/Chamber Music America Award for adventurous programming. He has performed with the St. Louis Brass Band that was awarded the 2001 NABBA Honors Championship. His jazz vibes and piano duo, The Haydon/Parker Duo, which has a CD on the ACA Digital Recording Label, entitled "My Foolish Heart" which received positive reviews from Percussive Arts Society. He has served as an adjudicator, conductor and clinician throughout the country. He was a faculty member of the United States Percussion Camp held at Eastern Illinois University, the UNLV Percussion Camp 2000, and hosted two summer percussion workshops at UM-St.Louis in 2000 and 2001. Dr. Parker served as the host and clinician during the Missouri Day of Percussion 2002 at UM-St. Louis featuring drum-set artist Ndugu Chancler. In 2003, Dr. Parker co-presented a clinic at the Missouri Day of Percussion in Columbia, MO. and taught /performed as a faculty member at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Western Michigan during the summer. In Fall 2006, he presented several clinics at the MENC North Central Division /Nebraska Music Educators Conference. Prior to his appointment at Fayetteville State University as Assistant Professor of Music (Percussion), he also held positions at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, Chadron State College (Nebraska) and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. At all of these institutions, he successfully wrote grants for cultural, equipment, and research projects through organizations such as the Nebraska Arts Council, NewBlom Foundation, the Title III Federal Program, and the City of St. Louis. Dr. Parker has a B.M. in Performance and Music Business from DePauw University and a M.M. and D.M.A. in Percussion Performance from the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Parker has endorsements with Sabian Cymbals, Sonor Drums, Mike Balter Mallets, Calato Regal Tip Sticks, Remo World Percussion, LP Music Group, Ross Mallet Instruments, and Dynasty Marching Percussion. Dr. Sheryl Linch-Parker, Assistant Professor of Music (Trumpet and Music Education) has actively pursued a career in the field of trumpet performance and music education since she started playing the trumpet. Prior to her appointment at Fayetteville State University, she has taught as a band director for the Hazelwood Public Schools (St. Louis, MO.) where she directed five elementary bands and maintained an active private studio for trumpet students in the region. She taught at Chadron State College as Associate Professor of Music where she taught music education methods courses in addition to supervision of music student teachers. She also taught studio trumpet to music majors, minors, and served as the Music department chair for four years. She also taught in the Callaway School District as K-12 music teacher several years prior to pursuing further education. As a performer in addition to Double Take, Dr. Linch-Parker currently performs with her Brass Quintet, Boulevard Brass, which has performed regionally and is currently developing repertoire for a variety of performances venues. She has also performed with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra since 2003 as a section and principal player. She performed on two recently released compact discs of concerts during the 50th Anniversary year of the FSO in Oct. 2006 and May 2007. As an educator, Dr. Sheryl Linch-Parker has served as a professional presenter at the local, state and national levels in the areas of music education and research. She has presented at the NASM 81st Annual Meeting in Boston in the fall 2005 and also published an article entitled "Improving Learning and Reducing Costs: New Models for Distance Learning and Online Courses" in their 2006 proceedings. She has recently presented four clinics /workshops dealing with the growing musician and collaborations at the MENC North Central Division/Nebraska Music Educators Conference in November 2006. Dr. Linch-Parker has a B.A. in Music Education from The University of Nebraska at Kearney and a Master of Music in trumpet performance from The University of Arizona in Tucson. Dr. Linch-Parker holds a Doctorate in Music Education (D.M.E.) from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. Dr. Linch-Parker has taught studio trumpet, presented clinics, master classes, and performed professionally throughout the country. Dr. Linch Parker holds membership in MENC, NCMEA, and the International Trumpet Guild and serves as advisor for the FSU Collegiate CMENC Chapter. Atmospheres, the first commissioned work written in 2004 by Dr. Howard J. Buss is a three-movement piece. Each movement utilizes a variety of colors and sounds with a diminished harmonic base. The first movement opens with statements from each instrument establishing some of the rhythmic ideas that will unfold between the parts. The use of the flugelhorn combined with a maraca ostinato in the second movement creates a dark lyrical mood that is later enhanced with additional percussion colors. The last movement brings the trumpet back with a constant changes between marimba and accessory percussion instruments. The tightly structured sections in this movement eventually return to the opening statement with a fanfare like ending. William Cahn (member of the NEXUS percussion group) completed Where Sirens Dwell, the second commissioned work, in June 2006. The music is scored for trumpet and percussion (vibraphone, tuned opera gongs, two suspended cymbals, and set of Noah bells) with prerecorded CD. Cahn offered these comments in is liner notes for the piece: "The Sirens of ancient Greek mythology were maidens whose songs were so alluring that mariners, upon hearing their singing, became spellbound leaving their ships to be dashed to pieces on the rocks." Six Interlocutions for Trumpet and Percussion by Dr. Gary Powell Nash, Associate Professor of Music at Fisk University, was completed in December 2003 for trumpeter Ivano Ascari. The composer stated that " Interlocution is another word for conversation and one of the least commonly used words for conversation. The major premise for this work is the allusion to six different types of conversation. The movements can be grouped in pairs in regards to comparison and contrast. Movements 1 and 6, respectively titled 'Opening Statement' and 'Conclusion' feature trumpet and timpani. Movement 2, titled 'Light Banter' offers a contrast from 'Opening Statement'. This slow tempo movement with a few meter changes begins with a vibraphone solo, uses vibraphone throughout most of the movement and ends with temple blocks and tom-toms accompanying the trumpet. It's counterpart is Movement 4, titled 'Be Correct or Be Happy' inspired by the philosophy 'Would you rather win an argument with the possibility of facing harsh consequences as a result or concede to your adversary and still allow for a pleasant situation for both parties?' Movements 3 and 5, respectively titled 'Call' and 'Response' feature trumpet and vibraphone solos respectively.
