Damon McMahon - Mansions

Until recently, Damon McMahon was the singer/guitarist of the celebrated but short-lived New York rock band Inouk. In their short career, Inouk released an acclaimed album and played with Modest Mouse, Secret Machines, the Double, White Magic, the Occasion and more. Striking out on his own, McMahon's quietly magnificent debut Mansions was recorded in a couple days this winter in NYC. With just his voice and a guitar, McMahon evokes a world of spectral desolation and melancholy, at once warm and acerbic. Recalling the haunted lyricism of Nick Drake, the fried folkstyles of Syd Barrett and the delicate tenor of Townes Van Zandt, McMahon's music is at once distinctive and timeless, psychedelic and spare, gentle and wry. Introduced to the world with a stunning and buzz-making set at SXSW this year, Damon McMahon is one Astralwerks' most exciting new artists in the tradition of Kings of Convenience and Beth Orton.
