Allenroy Paquin is a member of the Jicarilla Apache Nation of Northern New Mexico. He is also part Zuni of Zuni Pueblo, located in Western New Mexico. Since neither parent wanted to relocate to the other's reservation, they settled in Albuquerque, where Allenroy and his siblings were raised. Allenroy was taught the art of beadwork and pow wow dancing at a young age, and he adopted the plains style of dance as a means to hold on to his native culture. After Allenroy and his mother created the beadwork for his regalia, he started competing at powwows as a Grass Dancer and a Fancy Dancer. Today he is well known in pow wow arenas throughout the United States as a champion Fancy Dancer. His father, a Zuni Indian, was a Silversmith. Rather than follow in his father's footsteps, Allenroy completed his Associate of Science Degree in Engineering Technology and Mechanical Design at Eastern New Mexico University. Afterwards, he worked as a Senior Designer for an engineering firm in Albuquerque. When Allenroy inherited his father's silversmithing tools and lapidary equipment, as well as the Zuni tradition of jewelry making, he decided to pursue the art of silversmithing. He designed, hand-cut, hand-stamped, hand-finished, and fabricated his art in sterling silver and 14K gold. He is now recognized an award-winning Jeweler of contemporary Zuni inlay. In 2003, the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts ( SWAIA) honored him with the prestigious SWAIA Fellowship Award, at Santa Fe Indian Market, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Allenroy combined his dance with his childhood stories. He composed flute songs for each story to create a performance that is colorful, exciting, educational, entertaining, and fun. He is now directing his focus on stage performances as a professional Fancy Dancer, Storyteller and Flutist. He has already appeared at most of the nation's top American Indian Art Shows. He has also performed at international festivals in South Korea, France, Belgium and Guyana, South America. His objectives are as follows: to promote the American Indian Culture; to inform and educate students and the general public of the history and differences of Indian tribes; to break down the stereotypes of 'Hollywood Indians;' to provide an example of the beauty and talent of the American Indian; to abolish racial barriers; to be an advocate to having healthy drug and alcohol-free lives; and to be a role model for young American Indians. In 2004, Allenroy composed and recorded his Native American flute songs on his first CD, 'Just Playing Fancy.' He is currently recording his second CD, which contains the educational and entertaining stories he tells during his performances. Allenroy has given presentations on powwow etiquette, powwow dancing and regalia. He also has extensive experience performing for academic, private, and public organizations. He recently taught flute workshops in Belgium. Allenroy is available for bookings at Art Shows, Educational Institutions, Conventions, Conferences, Festivals, American Indian Heritage Month Celebrations, and Special Events.
