Music director at WQXL in Columbia, SC says, 'Living Water is a great song, the lyrics are anointed.' The is the 2000 debut release from James Goforth. James is a Texas born acoustic rock musician, with a bit of country mixed in. On this disc, James plays guitar and provides vocals, while supported by various studio session musicians (including bass legend Chuck Rainey). Overall, the style of the disc is very much in the Contemporary Christian realm, and doesn't try to be anything different. Solid acoustic pop/rock songwriting and lyrics proclaiming a strong Christian faith, all combine to make this a release that has broad appeal. Production is extremely well done, and everything is handled professionally. The uptempo rock feel of 'Believer' and 'New Song' show us that James is able to deliver a pop song that can sound appropriate alongside anything from Steve Curtis Chapman or Third Day. James also shows us his passion for Christ, via praise songs like 'Redeemed', 'Living Water', and 'Hope of the Faithful'. I could see James using any of these tunes while leading a church 'praise and worship' service. The arrangement of 'Power In The Blood' brings to mind John Mellencamp or Tom Petty. 'Americana' is the description I use to best describe the vibe I get off this. This is also a very good study in how to take a traditional song and give it a personal stamp. 'His Hand' is a soft acoustic ballad with additional percussion. Lyrics speak of how God touches all areas of our lives, especially through the death of his son Jesus. I found this to be one of the musical highlights on the disc, as it stepped away from the 'radio friendly' feel of the rest of the disc. 'Latter Rain' is an uptempo instrumental track, which I thought was an interesting choice. It's a good song, and I would like to see James sprinkle more of these instrumentals throughout his release. I enjoyed listening to this release, and only found a couple areas of critique. I think the guitar solo in 'Living Water' didn't fit the song appropriately, and I think the song 'Two Hearts' doesn't quite stand up to the high quality of the rest of the songwriting. Otherwise, not much to find wrong here. In summary, this is a very solid debut release, and has a musical style that will appeal to a many (especially those fans of contemporary Christian music). I think James Goforth has a high quality product here, and should do well. I hear he is working on a second release, and I am hoping for even greater things.
