She is an accomplished vocalist, harpist, pianist and flutist, and her musical career has included work as a public school music teacher, a private music instructor, a church musician, and a performer. Singing songs of faith is her passion, and she has performed as a vocal soloist in concert halls and churches alike. Karin now serves as a Harp Practitioner in hospice facilities, and is fondly known as the 'singing harpist.' Her ministry brings peace and comfort to patients and their families in times of sorrow and pain. She is often privileged to share in the amazing experiences of these patients as they cross over into heaven, as families are reconciled, people come to new faith in Christ, and some even see visions of angels, departed loved ones, or Jesus himself. As Christians, we have the assurance of eternal life with God, but sometimes there is still fear of the unknown process of dying. We have friends and family with life threatening or terminal illnesses, we have friends who are grieving the loss of someone they love. THE ORIGIN OF THE HEAVENLY HARP MINISTRY AND CD The patient at Gardiner home lay unconscious. She hadn't had anything to drink for two weeks. She had outlasted everyone's predictions. 'They told me she would be gone a week ago,' said the patient's best friend of 30 years. 'I don't know why she's still here.' Karin Gunderson, a harpist for Hospice of the Valley, played and sang hymns at the bedside. 'I told her how well-prepared the Lord allows people to become before He brings them home.' As I continued to sing and share some examples the woman hesitated for a moment, then looked at me and said: 'You are the reason she is still here. I was supposed to meet you.' I knew she was right but had no idea why.' The patient died later that day and out of her family's response came the CD she had long known that she needed to produce. 'It's been an interesting road that brought us to this point. Looking back, I believe the beginning of my journey started with singing in nursing homes and church as young as 6 years old. My family adopted a baby brother when I was 8. I brought him to school for show and tell! He was such an energetic, fun boy as he grew. His hero was the Fonz from Happy Days and he even got a look-a-like leather jacket. He always wanted an electric guitar. When he was seven we found out he had brain cancer. If it was the slow growing kind he could live 10-20 years, if it was the aggressive kind, 6-12 months. He died 5 months later. When we found out he was dying I wanted to do something special for him, so I took my hard-earned babysitting money and bought him a used electric guitar. He strummed it as he lay in his bed (Mom and Dad made sure he didn't get an amplifier.) Near the end he couldn't talk and he could only communicate with his eyes. One of the most difficult things for me was when Dad asked him if he was scared and his eyes went wild. I wished so badly that I could take away that fear, but I had no personal experience with death. I felt helpless to comfort him.' 'I realized recently that God, in his graciousness, has now given me a way to help others overcome the fear and uncertainty of death. Through the stories that those who have been resuscitated have shared and those who have been close enough to see through the veil between this earthly life and the heavenly one that awaits have experienced, I have been given a taste of the beauty of what is to come.' 'God took the thing that hurt me most deeply about my brother - there was nothing I could do to quell that fear,' Karin said. 'He gave me a way, through music and storytelling, to ease people's fears. How merciful of God to allow me to minister to others what I could not minister to my own brother.' 'People who hear it say they sense the Holy Spirit's presence, especially in the story and song CD. Many people come back to buy more CDs, to share a meaningful gift with those who are facing cancer or life-threatening illness, those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, those who are on hospice or those who fear death.' If the CD weren't enough, Karin also dreams of someday creating a retreat center. She realized that was her dream after reading The Dream Giver. 'I want a place for people to walk through woods on paths, sit on benches, rest in a hammock - a beautiful place of peace for rest and renewal with peaceful harp music and daily worship,' she said. For now, Karin would like to gain experience at conducting retreats, and see how God might someday provide a location. In October, Karin led the adult education time at her church's All-congregation Camp, and also designed and led a women's retreat at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree. Her unique leadership is based in God's Word, and includes spiritual reflection and discussion, harp and vocal music, worship, and prayer. What is driving all this activity? Karin, a pastor's daughter, says the Lord guides her life. Throughout her life, she has viewed God as benevolent, comforting, loving and accepting. Those qualities surround her in family and friends.
