In the early '60s, Smith kept an ear to the ground for popular rumblings, and the emergent soul and funk genres proved fertile sources for his musical imagination. With arranger Oliver Nelson on hand, the organist led these tasteful and well-constructed tracks accompanied by a wonderful array of players, including Jimmy's long-term sparring partner, guitarist Kenny Burrell. Previously released on 2 LPs, this single CD highlights funky pop cuts, as well as compositions by Ellington, Strayhorn and Nelson.
