Created in 1998, Theory's album, Coming Down From the Trees, is an eclectic blend of avant garde, spoken word, folk, and acoustically driven rock. Singer Michael Gowans creates wordscapes rather than lyrics while guitarist Dayne Fiorello paints the sound canvas on which they are built. Most tracks on the album were written and recorded simultaneously, or written improvisationally and then recorded in one take. Here is what guitarist Dayne Fiorello had to say about the recording process: 'Michael and I would sit down in front of my humble 4 track cassette studio, with a couple of microphones aimed at us, and just begin creating. I would begin to play something on the guitar, and he [Michael] would just begin singing; following my changes as i made them. Later, i would go back and overdub bass, and drums, or whatever else we wanted on there. Some of the songs on the CD were completely improv off the top of our heads. Tracks 11-14 (the bathroom songs) represent the first time we ever played together at all. We put two microphones in a college bathroom and just completely improvised. I happened to have captured it on tape. From that point on, we really liked capturing that stream of consciousness approach to our writing.'
