Hello, listener! Welcome to "Cocinera"! First, I'll go ahead and translate for context: 'cocinera' is Spanish for 'cook', lady cook. So I guess that this album is self-titled, or rather, job titled. When I wrote this album, cooking is what I did for a living. I've been working in kitchens for the past and first two years that I've lived on my own, all of the while writing and performing my music. My attention was divided equally between food and music, so when I was presented with the opportunity to record an album, I didn't actually know what else to do: 'Cocinera' is music approached like food, and the stories of a 19 year old line cook. I wanted to make you a really great album, but 'Cocinera' isn't really about being great. It's more like burning things and mispronouncing words and struggling to do your job correctly. I wanted to tell you my story, so these songs are my 40-hours-a-week kind of realizations; they're about the things I wish I didn't have to learn but that I did anyway. When putting together the music itself, I decided to approach the instrumentation, flow, and sound of this album as though it was all edible. I treated every sound in these songs like a flavor in a dish. I treated each song like a course in a meal. I like to think that this album is the audible taste of the life I've been living. Thank you for listening, and all of my best Ashlyn Thatcher.
