If defying stereotypes were a crime, Lauren Brombert would have a long rap sheet. Raised on two continents, she is neither completely American nor completely European. She has degrees in Ancient Greek and Russian Studies from Haverford College and Yale University as well as years of teaching at the university level under her belt but she is a guitar-playing vocal powerhouse who fronts a band and, according to Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago-Sun Times, "has a knack for crafting alluring melodies." Though she didn't start songwriting until after graduate school, her first four-song demo got local airplay and lured some of Chicago's most renowned musicians into her band. She delivers heavy-hitting electric rockers as well as heart-wrenching acoustic ballads. With songwriting that is accessible but challenging, intelligent but moving, well-structured but not entirely predictable, she appeals to musicians and non-musicians alike. "Closer Than Skin" continues Brombert's modern rock journey into the various dimensions of the human experience, embracing the carnal, the spiritual, the philosophical, and the emotional. This collection of songs reveals a rawer, edgier side of her writing than her critically acclaimed debut album "From These Stones," which was selected by Performing Songwriter as a Top 12 DIY.
