Michael Dyer - Christmas Comes Just Once a Year

In late November 2008 I was listening to the radio and 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree' and 'Frosty The Snowman' were being played. Frankly, I was getting a bit bored with hearing the same Christmas classics each holiday season and so I decided to try my hand at writing an Xmas song. What resulted was 'Santa, Ya Little Troll' (in which Santa not only leaves coals for a naughty boy but also takes away the toys that his parents had left for him under the tree). After I finished this song I didn't know in what CD to place it, so I decided to try writing 11 more songs and thus produce a complete Xmas CD. I wrote all the songs here during the 2008-9 holiday season and many were inspired by Xmas poems, classic yuletide song titles or Christmas movies. For example, '12 Minutes to Christmas' was inspired by the title 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'. It's about a boy and a girl desperate to open their presents but their mom tells them they have to wait just 12 minutes for their dad to wake up, then just 11 minutes for ... The song 'Christmas Comes Just Once A Year' was inspired by the poem ''Twas The Night Before Christmas'. The song 'A Christmas BB Gun' was inspired by the movie 'A Christmas Story' (Remember, that's the one in which little Ralphie wants Santa to bring him an air rifle but his mom says that he will put out someone's eye). 'We 3 Kings of Rock 'n' Roll' was inspired by the 1857 classic 'We Three Kings Of Orient Are' but this new song is much more upbeat in tempo. My song 'Snow Flake Dog' was inspired by the title 'Frosty The Snowman' and also by the fact that I had a beautiful snow white dog (named Frosty) for many years. 'Have A Happy New Year' as inspired by the 1700s classic 'Auld Lang Syne'. The last song I wrote was 'Christmas Day in L.A.' I was lying on the beach in Los Angeles in early Jan 2009 when I heard that a huge snow storm was hitting the Midwest and East Coast. I had grown up in Maryland and I started thinking about how different the Xmas season feels in Los Angeles, compared to the MidWest and East coast. I hope that many people will enjoy these new holiday songs and that they will become classics. Then, hopefully, other singers will also choose to perform them.
