ABBA Pater contains prayers and Mass excerpts offered by Pope John Paul II originally broadcast on Vatican radio, now set to music composed by Leonardo de Amicis and Stefano Mainetti. The accompanying booklet includes translations in English and Spanish from the original Italian. Personnel includes: Pope John Paul II (spoken vocals); Catharina Sharp (vocals); Riccardo Biseo, Leonardo de Amicis (conductor); Orchestra Nuova Sinfonietta Roma, Orchestra St. Caterina d'Alessandria, Roman Academy Choir, Pablo Colino Choir. Producers: Vincent Messina, Leonardo de Amicis. Engineers: Fabrizio Boccherini, Fabio Patrignani, Gianluca Vaccaro. Recorded at the Forum Music Village and Wolfi Studio, Rome, Italy. This is the first recording ever to set the words of Pope John Paul II to musical accompaniment. The music, principally composed by Leonardo de Amicis, is a combination of sacred choral singing, light symphonic styles and synthesized world music and pop motifs. The narrative/recitation mostly consists of texts from the liturgy, are "sampled" from the Pope's speeches given at various locations (and for many occasions, some religious, some not) from 1980 through 1997. The music sets it's sights on the heavens, while the firm, consoling tones of one of this centuries great spiritual leaders urge listeners to set their sights as high. An interesting and very listenable experiment.
