Over seventy years ago our nation was embroiled in a fight, not just to save the nation but literally all of civilization as we know it. Seventy years ago we began to turn the tide: The Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, The Battle of Midway, the landing of Guadalcanal and the invasion of North Africa. Over seventy years ago we were one nation dedicated to fighting evil and restoring peace to the world. The brutality of the Axis HAD to be stopped. What was remarkable is who did it. The average G.I. Joe and Jane Doe. We rose as a people to fight 'The Good War' and became 'The Greatest Generation.' Kids from farms and cities who had never been past the corner malt shop were landing on forbidding shores, manning bombers over distant targets, working 24 hour shifts in defense plants and ship yards as the nation became 'The Arsenal of Democracy.' We all know the great big band music of the era: Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. We all heard them on the radio or on our Victrola that played the '78' recordings. BUT most people heard live music from town bands or assigned military bands. These arrangements have largely remained silent for over 70 years. In 2011 the Palmyra-Eagle Community Band embarked on a program to revive the concert band music of the 1940's with a program called 'The 40's: A Sentimental Journey.' Most of these arrangements have not been played by concert bands since the 1940's. To honor the 70th anniversary of World War II and the sacrifice of so many millions we are proud to announce the return of those bygone sounds with 'The 40's: A Sentimental Journey.' Included are songs made famous by Dooley Wilson, Marlene Dietrich, Spike Jones, Judy Garland and Bing Crosby. Come back to a time of the USO club, the Stage Door Canteen and the famous Armed Forces 'Command Performance' with these thrilling sounds. This CD is not just a typical nostalgic collection - you will feel as if you have gone back in time to experience a little of what life was like from 1941 to 1945. From December 7th with 'Remember Pearl Harbor' to VJ Day with 'A Sentimental Journey,' we will take you back to everything from stirring bond rallies to tearful farewell at lonely docksides. So to paraphrase a letter of the day - 'Greetings from Uncle Sam: We request the honor of your presence listening to 'The 40's: A Sentimental Journey' proudly presented by the Palmyra-Eagle Community Band, Palmyra Wisconsin, under the direction of 'Mr. Ed' Pierce.
