Radio Free Honduras is quickly becoming a staple on the Midwest Latin Music scene, and features Honduran music legend Charlie Baran. In Honduras, Baran was a core member of the band Banda Blanca, which rose to fame in 1990 when the song "Sopa de Caracol" became an international hit, hitting number one on the Billboard Latin chart for the United States. After relocating to Chicago, Baran formed Casolando, a band which was at the forefront of the Latin scene in Chicago for many years. In 2011, Baran teamed up with guitarist Dan Abu-Absi, best known for his work on Chicago's rock scene with JT and the Clouds and Birds of Chicago. Together, Baran and Abu-Absi have now launched Radio Free Honduras. Near the end of 2014 they released their self-titled debut, which features Grammy Award winning harmonica player Howard Levy (best known for his work with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones), Grammy nominated vocalist Paulinho Garcia, and Americana darlings Birds of Chicago among others. Recent RFH gigs include Fiesta Del Sol, in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, the largest Latino Festival in the Midwest. The debut Radio Free Honduras CD is slated for release this fall.
