The 5 highest-grossing Marvel movies

Superhero movies have dominated the box office for a while now, with some making billions of dollars.

It’s an exciting year for Marvel fans, with a number of films coming to the cinema this year, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, and The Marvels

These new releases will no doubt smash it at the box office, so in the meantime, let’s have a look at the highest-grossing Marvel movies of all time!

In this blog:

Avengers: Endgame

Released in 2019, Avengers: Endgame is the highest-grossing Marvel film to date and one of the highest-grossing films of all time!

Regarded as one of the best MCU films, it focuses on the aftermath of Thanos wiping out half of the world’s population. Just as the Avengers go their separate ways, they find a way to retrieve all of the Infinity Stones. The Avengers reunite to take down Thanos and save the universe.

Avengers: Endgame has made around $2.79 billion, with a production budget of $356 million. However, it is the first film to achieve the title of the highest-grossing film of all time to not win an Oscar.

A few things you may not know about the film is it was Stan Lee’s last ever cameo in a Marvel film. Also, Robert Downey Jr was the only actor who was given the entire script!

Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War was the highest-grossing film of 2018 and its opening weekend was the biggest of all time. Then Avengers: Endgame was released the year after, which beat it.

The movie focuses on Thanos and his mission to wipe out half of the universe by collecting all six Infinity Stones. The Avengers team up with Wakanda’s forces to fight Thanos and his army.

Making around $2.05 billion worldwide at the box office, Avengers: Infinity War had a budget of $321 million. It even received a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars.

You may not know, but the film was originally supposed to have a different title but Marvel decided to simplify it instead to avoid confusion. Plus, an early idea for the film was to introduce a new Marvel character but in the end, it didn’t make much sense.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Released during the pandemic, Spider-Man: No Way Home still made $1.9 billion worldwide at the box office and $260 million in its opening weekend.

Apart from an Avengers movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home is the most successful Marvel film. The sequel sees Peter Parker’s identity revealed and he asks Doctor Strange for help, but the spell goes wrong. This leads to the multiverse being unlocked, and with it, supervillains from the different Spider-Man universes. Peter asks for help and this results in an iconic meeting between all three Spider-Men.

With a budget of $200 million, it became the highest-grossing film of 2021. It was also nominated for an Academy Award and has gone on to win a Visual Effects Society award and Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice awards.

The Avengers

Released way back in 2012, The Avengers was the highest-grossing film of that year and has made $1.5 billion worldwide at the box office.

With a budget of $220 million, it broke a whole load of records, including opening weekend for a film, opening weekend for any film, and many more. The Avengers was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

The first Avengers film sees Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Hulk coming together to fight Loki and his army after he opens a wormhole in New York City.
In the UK, the film was given a different title, named Marvel Avengers Assemble.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Released in 2015, Avengers: Age Of Ultron made $1.4 billion worldwide at the box office, with a $250 million budget.

It became the fourth highest-grossing film of 2015 and made $191.3 million in its opening weekend.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is set a few years later in Sokovia, where The Avengers find Lokis’s scepter. We see the introduction of characters such as The Maximoff twins, Pietro and Wanda. The film ends in a battle and the mid-credits tease that a villain will wreak havoc on the MCU.

Aside from The Avengers movies, let’s not forget some of the other highest-grossing films from Marvel, all of which grossed over $1 billion worldwide:

  • Black Panther
  • Iron Man 3
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Spider-Man Far From Home
  • Captain Marvel
