Essential listening: the ladies of Coachella
The festival of the year, Coachella, starts today! This year sees the most female dominated lineup yet as 33% of the artists performing are women. If you can’t make it to the festival, don’t worry! We’ve got a list of some of the hottest female artists gracing the stage this weekend as well as their best tracks.
Arguably one of the most important female artists of the last two decades is finally headlining! Her husband Jay-Z headlined the festival back in 2010, bringing his wife out for a rendition of Forever Young, so we wouldn’t be too surprised if Jay graced the stage this year. Queen Bey was due to headline last year but pulled out after falling pregnant with twins, Sir and Rumi. It’s been reported that Beyoncé has put in a lot of hours into rehearsal so we’re expecting a high-energy set packed full of amazing tracks!
The name on everyone’s lips at the moment is Cardi B. Belcalis Almanzar is everywhere! Her track Bodak Yellow dropped last summer and became the hottest track of the year. Her debut album Invasion of Privacy dropped just last week and is believed to go number one this weekend. We were left wondering if Cardi would pull out of this year’s festival as she’s recently announced her own pregnancy but all looks good as she’s still set to take the stage on Sunday.
She’s one of the brightest sparks in the rap industry and DeJ Loaf will take to the stage on Sunday. She’s got a strong back catalogue behind her; breaking out in her own right but also working with some of the best artists around such as The Game, Kid Ink and Sunday’s headliner Eminem. DeJ has already hinted on social media that her debut album, Liberated, is almost ready so we’ve got our fingers crossed that some new tracks will get their debut at Coachella!
Three-piece outfit HAIM broke out back in 2013 with their debut album, Days Are Gone. Their second album, hotly anticipated Something to Tell You dropped in July 2017 and the world was grooving to their slick sound all summer! The sister trio first took to the stage at Coachella in 2014.
Miss Jorja Smith cause the eyes and ears of none other than Drake, who featured her on two songs on his last album, More Life; Jorja Interlude and Get It Together. There are plenty of other big names Jorja has been working with such as UK grime superstar Stormzy, Khalid and Preditah. Sandwiched between her Coachella appearances, Smith will be playing a sold out show in San Luis Obispo and one in San Francisco.
The 21 year old sensation from Norway, Sigrid, is set to take her infectious track Strangers to Coachella! The rising star has festival experience under her belt, having played Glastonbury last summer. Sigrid also won the BBC Music Sound of 2018 award in January. She’s in good company – previous recipients include 50 Cent, Adele and fellow Coachella performers HAIM!
After a hugely successful 2017 as her fifth album Masseduction was one of the highest rated albums of the year, St. Vincent is one of the artists to see at Coachella. Annie Clark is taking to the stage on Friday night – no doubt we’ll hear a range of brilliant tracks from her decade-spanning career.
Another artist who had an incredible 2017 is SZA. She’s one of the most exciting artists in the world at the moment, with her debut album Ctrl gaining a wealth of critical acclaim. SZA has already toured with Bryson Tiller, Jessie J and Jhené Aiko, and will be on the Championship Tour in May.
