New Year's decluttering

Moving house? Here’s why you should declutter first!

Are you planning to move house soon? Then you really need to declutter first. Here’s why!

You have more stuff than you thought

When you start packing stuff into boxes, you start digging into corners of your house you’d forgotten. Long lost drawers with trinkets you didn’t realise you’d bought. Cupboards with clothes you can’t even remember existing. Stuff like that.

This stuff piles up and soon enough, you’ve got 10 boxes full of stuff you forgot about but still need to drag to your new home. And then, to make matters worse, you have to find somewhere else for it at the new place!

Do yourself a favour: get rid of anything you don’t want before you pack anything.

Moving stuff sucks

The average moving day goes like this:

Excitement at moving to a new place.

Eager lifting of furniture and boxes out of your old house into a truck or van.

Slightly less eager lifting of furniture and boxes into your new house.

Repeat until you realise you have too much stuff, your arms ache and you’d love nothing more than a nap, but you still have half your possessions to move.

The fact is, moving sucks. It’s hard work, even if you hire a moving company to help. Decluttering means you’ve got less stuff to move on the big day. Trust us, you’ll be glad you did it when the time comes!

You’ll have extra cash for furniture, repairs and fees

In a perfect world, you’d move into your new house and everything would be fine from day one. Unfortunately, that’s often not the case; something might break and you’ll need cash to fix it, or you might spot something you missed during the viewing that needs immediate attention.

Alternatively, you might just need some new furniture to make your new house feel more like a home or you might get stung by fees you’d forgotten about, like checking out and paperwork fees, especially if you’re renting an apartment.

To avoid any nasty surprises, sell some of your unwanted stuff before you move and put the cash aside just in case. If you don’t end up needing it, treat yourself instead!

You can hire a smaller van or truck

If you don’t have access to a van or lorry, hiring one can be expensive – especially if you’ve got a lot of stuff.

The more stuff you can sell or recycle before you move, the less space you’ll need in the back of a van or truck. So not only will you make money by decluttering, you’ll save some too!

A fresh start

Moving to a new house, even if it’s in the same area as your old one, is like a fresh new start…unless you’re weighed down by all your old stuff.

Moving is the perfect opportunity to get rid of the things you don’t want anymore; the CDs you don’t listen to, the phones you’d forgotten about, the clothes that haven’t been worn since 2009.

You won’t regret it, especially when you move into a new home with just the stuff you need!
