Missing! 5 long-awaited games that should be released now

Last year, Sony shocked the world by revealing footage from The Last Guardian at E3. Last seen in 2011, everyone assumed it was dead and buried. They were wrong.

Maybe these games will emerge from purgatory next…

Half Life 3

It’s nearly 10 years since Half Life 2: Episode 2 was released and we still don’t know whether Half Life 3 exists, let alone whether it’s actually coming out.

New rumours emerge every week, either confirming or denying it’s existence. The latest rumour suggests that it definitely is coming out and will be great, although it’s from an anonymous source.

In all honesty, it’s probably not coming out. Since Half Life 2, Valve’s gaming platform Steam has become a sensation. They have plenty on their plate with Dota 2, one of the world’s most popular multiplayer games, too.

Factor in the resignation of Marc Laidlaw, one of Half Life’s writers, earlier this year and things are looking bleak. There’s still some hope though, with references to the game apparently cropping up in the code for a HTC Vive benchmark testing tool.

Star Wars 1313

Everyone knows Han Solo is the coolest Star Wars character, which is why we were so excited to play 1313.

While you don’t get to play as Solo (as far as we know), the game focuses on the bounty hunters and criminals of Coruscant’s underworld. Imagine playing as a smuggler!

Unfortunately, the game was pretty much cancelled when Disney bought LucasFilm and gave the Star Wars game rights to EA. That said, EA could still technically release 1313. And why wouldn’t they? Anything with Star Wars on the front is guaranteed to make money!

RAGE 2

RAGE was one of the most underrated games of the previous generation, a first person shooter that was as innovative as it was exciting. It’s also the only video game to make an appearance in Breaking Bad, which gives it even more cool points.

A sequel was definitely in the works at some point, although it seems to have been put on the backburner while id Software work on different projects (including the upcoming Doom sequel).

The good news is id Software’s co-founder Tim Willits has confirmed the franchise is “not dead”, so there’s still a chance RAGE 2 will be released.

Fifth Phantom Saga

One of the first games ever shown on the PS3 (yep, it’s that old), Fifth Phantom Saga hasn’t been heard from in over 10 years. Normally, that would mean its dead in the water… but Sega have never actually cancelled it.

Developed by Sonic Team, the game let players kill enemies and complete quests by controlling a phantom. Not much else was revealed, but the concept alone looks pretty cool.

While the chances of this ever coming out are slim to none, it would be amazing if Sega unveiled it this year. It must be good if they’ve been working on it for over 10 years, right?

*Looks at copy of Duke Nukem Forever* oh…

Beyond Good &Evil 2

Beyond Good & Evil was the videogame equivalent of an arthouse flick. The critics loved it for its complex narrative and awesome gameplay but its sales were dismal.

Despite this, a sequel was announced in 2008. Unfortunately, we’ve heard pretty much nothing since.

Interest in Beyond Good & Evil 2 was reignited in 2011 when the original was re-released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. But there’s still no sign of it.

For what it’s worth, Ubisoft confirmed the game is still in development and Michel Ancel, the game’s director’, claims he’s still working on it. So it’s still happening – but who knows when?

TimeSplitters 4

TimeSplitters was one of the most popular FPS games of the PS2/Xbox era but the series seemingly fell off the face of the planet after the third instalment.

Sadly, it’s not because of a lack of effort. Unlike some of the games in this post, the team behind TimeSplitters seem desperate to get a 4th game off the ground. Apparently, publishers aren’t keen on taking on the franchise despite its popularity among gamers.

There is still a chance it’ll happen though, with a source at Crytek UK (formerly Free Radical Design, the studio behind TimeSplitters) claiming there is a lot of love for the game among the team. Maybe they’ll work on it after Homefront: Revolution?
