Here’s Which Video Game Each State Sucks At The Most

That game you just suck at. You try and try but you just can’t get past that bit, so you turn to Google for help…

You’re not alone. All over the country we all suck at some game or another. But which games are we really bad at? And does that change from state to state?

Well, we found out exactly that. Using data from Google Trends we looked at which states searched most frequently for cheats and walkthroughs for the most popular games over the last 11 years.

Bad news, guys: it turns out we’re all pretty bad at something…

The Nerdy Bit

Here’s the nitty gritty:

– Research was carried out from 11/09/2015 – 11/13/2015

– Top 20 video games analysed over the last 11 years, according to Metacritic

– We then used Google Trends to search for each game name with the four modifiers appended i.e. “[game] cheats”, “[game] walkthroughs”, “[game] hints” and “[game] tips”.

– Google trends does the following a) Shows search volume over time for each search term entered on an index, illustrating the popularity of search terms relatively on an index from 0-100. b) Shows data from 2004 onwards (this was why our video games selection only went back 11 years) c) Allows a limited level of geographic segmentation, and shows the index by state, so the state that has performed the most searches for a phrase will index at 100 and so on downward d) Controls for population, meaning that although larger states may search for a term more, volume is divided over population to give a fair reflection

– We then tested all of the games, listed each state in the index position for the search term

– Where two states have identical Google Trends Index scores, we looked at the raw search volume for each phrase as the decider.

– Different states can be worst at the same game. This is generally a reflection of the popularity of certain games.

– It’s also possible for a state to be worst performing at one of the four games we looked at in detail, but also appear with a different game in the headline map. This simply means they searched for even more cheat-related phrases for that game than they did for the game we looked at in detail. And if that’s not clear, I don’t know what is.

There we have it America. You suck.
